about
Finger-Style guitar with vocal song. Live recording with simple reverb.
My father recently passed away after 96 years on this planet. Up until the last few months he was always there for me to call and discuss life with. But weeks prior to his passing he rapidly dropped into a state of extreme dementia. This song was triggered by my knowing somehow that I had said my last goodbye to the man I knew and loved in a call weeks prior to his passing. I miss him.
Should have, could have, are words too often said
Banging as you look back, that same wall against your head
Now the sun comes up and the sun will set,
and the aching hours will seep
Into the dreams you can’t forget,
when you can’t go back to sleep
So you roll with the punches and check your compass,
and you tell yourself you’re fine
When you know instead, as you crawl out of bed
It’s just one day at a time
Oh here I stand, snow in my hair
And the wind blows out of the North
And as I face South, I think about
The times we shared of course
And I guess I should, if only I could
Spread my wings to fly
But standing here, I already know
We’ve said our last goodbye
So I took the call and now I know
For sure you’ve traveled on
But you wouldn’t have like the live you had
Just lying from dawn to dawn
I bet you’re in a field somewhere checking out the sky
Or bending down to tend the soil and sowing seeds nearby
And I wonder if you can see me
As I’m holding back from crying
‘cause I know that just might free me
From this doubting and denying
Oh here I stand, snow in my hair
And the wind blows out of the North
And as I face South, I think about
The times we shared of course
And I guess I should, if only I could
Spread my wings to fly
But standing here, I already know
We’ve said our last goodbye
