about
So for the moment the U.S. seems to be seeing a steady reduction in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths. (Although this can always change.) The irony is that people are all feeling a bit safer but I wonder what we have learned as a culture from this pandemic. Is it really safer for everyone? Didn't we find out that many people lost their jobs, that many service workers like wait staff, truck drivers and nurses had to take on risks while many others did not. Has their wage been adjusted to reflect this? Didn't we learn that a country without a health system that serves all in need fails to be safe place to live.
This song asks the question: When do we really know it's safe enough for everyone? When the masks all finally come off, will "normal" be safe for everyone?
Is it safe enough to go out in the world now
To climb aboard life's Ferris Wheel and look down
I've been slaying unseen dragons and riding on ghost trains
Circling the wagons and pulling back the reins
Been backed into a corner folding daytime into night
Pushed against the border 'till the time is right
Can you tell me that it's safe enough to live again
Won't you tell when it's safe enough
Is it safe enough to leave the castle boundary
To journey out and touch the world around me
I've been fortified and branded and I'd like to join the herd
Feeling like I'm stranded, well below the curve
Just staring at my compass and I'm looking for a sign
To guide me back to normal and to put me back in line
Can you tell me that it's safe enough to live again
Won't you tell when it's safe enough
When its safe enough to step into the halls again
Will the world look just the same or more aware then
That friends and strangers, need a world that's fair
and that healing only works when we all care
When it's safe enough to join, the surviving human race
Will we see a life that's better, for every unmasked face.
Can you tell me that it's safe enough to live again
Won't you tell when it's safe enough
Can you tell me that it's safe enough to live again
Won't you tell when it's safe enough
